What are the good places to visit around New York for 3 days?

I just moved in to Schenectady, NY. I would like to see some good places (around 300 - 500 miles away) this long weekend?
I am looking for a trip of 3 days. I am interested in site seeing (things that I would not be able to experience in India). I visited Boston the last weekend and am planning to visit Niagara falls and New York city some time later. Can anyone please help me.. Please it is urgent as I need to plan things beforehand!

It all depends on whether you simply want to float thru a pleasant "trip to NYC," or actually see what the city is like.
When you decide, many will be able to fill you in.

The Statue of Liberty, The Empire State Building, Chinatown, Ground Zero, Browse through Macy's on 34th St, ride the Subways (don't get lost), Central Park. There are lots of Sightseeing Buses.

I gather you are NOT looking for suggestions in New York City this weekend. You should understand that as a holiday weekend much will be closed. You should consider visiting Albany, the state capital, with a number of interesting modern and historic sites. Also, anyone visiting New York State should see (a) the Finger Lakes region, and (b) Adirondack State Park, which is so beautiful it inspired an entire school, of art in the 19th Century (the Hudson River school).

Well you aren't that far from Montreal and very close to Lake George, Lake Champlain and the Adirondak Montains....head North...

Go to the WTC site. Ride the Staten Island ferry; it's fun and free.
Go to Grand Central Station and have lunch. Visit Ellis Island to find out what America's all about. Do a day of shopping on 5th avenue; visit Tiffany's and buy a little souvenir on the 3rd floor. Walk through Central Park; while you're there, walk across Central Park West and visit the Apple store.

You will absolutely love New York. My first trip was in 2003 and I had been back 8 times, I can't get enough of it.

Depends on where you are staying NY, always stay within the area of your hotel after it gets dark. I stayed at a hotel in Times Square and I have made it a point to return to Times Square before sunset. I didn't loose nothing in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens so I don't go there.

Here are some of the things I did. I rented a bike on Columbia Circle near Central Park and took two hours just to ride a bike there, awesome experience! I took a three hour cruise on the Circle Cruise. The cruise goes around Manhatten and they have somebody on the boat that will point out the highlights. They do get close enough to the Statue of Liberty so you can get some good pictures. I did the Top of The Rock (Rockefeller Center) and from there, you can see St. Patrick's Cathedral, the Empire State Building and Central Park. We also done the Empire State Building as well. I also took the subway to WTC and I highly suggest a tour of that site. Most of the tour guides either had loved ones in the WTC on 9/11 or they were actually worked there. It's very moving. While there, you can also tour Wall Street and see the NYSE and Federal Hall across the street where George Washington took his oath of office. Even though Macy's are located everywhere, Macy's on 34th Street have a wooden escalator to floor 1 and half. While on 34th Street, you'll be in the garment district and that is where you will find clothes, nice clothes and within reason. I've found many shirts I can not find anywhere else. I also purchased a red pin stripe suit there as well. I also toured the Radio City Music Hall and one of the Rockettes will greet you towards the end of that tour. When you get the opportunity, ask the Rockette if she will do the famous kick line. I attend the Today Show taping which is free but get there early, 5am is adequate and then your friends can see you on TV.

The food is amazing. I love the delis because there is a variety and you can decide on the portions you desire. But at least splurge on one good dinner. I tried the Firebird Resturaunt (Russian) on 46th Street (called Resturaunt Row). And there is nothing like a good old fashioned hot dog from the street vendors.
