I have a very good friend that's trying to teach her daughter from home
Is there anyway to get help with teaching a 4th grader. Her funds are limted. She has tried homeschooling but it's really hard she doesn't know how to go about getting help. If she has to pay is there one that's not expense.

PS- She went to the school her daughter would attend and they WOULD NOT HELP HER.

IME, NY was a very unfriendly homeschooling state. By laws, the schools don't have to help because the parents are taking on the responsibility themselves.

What kind of help is she looking for? Help understanding her state laws? Help in writing out her IHIP? Help planning studies? Help choosing materials? Help keeping records? Help in working with her child? Or maybe she's feeling uncomfortable/lacking confidence and needs reassurance?

I could answer better if I knew what kind of help she needs.

I don't personally have a specific umbrella school or distance learning program to recommend because I've never used one, but if she doesn't find one, I might suggest:

-Checking out the library to see if she can get access to/check out teachers materials and use them to guide her

-Look for a homeschool support group or co-op and see if other parents can help her or offer suggestions

- find a second-hand pre-packaged curriculum that tells you just what to do-- assignments, tests, everything in there. No guess work, just follow it, and you can even deviate from it when feeling inspired or creative.

If you can be more specific about the troubles she's having, I might be able to offer better suggestions.

Kids Defense Team Does Home Work Help if you are interested. It would be over the computer. We have a forum with homeschooling information. I could move all that information over to here with the permission of POP and Theresa. I always wanted to get a better homework helpline going for smaller kids. I have been doing more college age with research. I homeschooled my son so I know basically what needs to be done. I can research what her curriculum needs to be or you could tell me. We are a non profit organization so we do not ask for money.
