and Pennsylvania (1949)?
Hah! This question was posted six minutes ago, and already the ignorant have made their showing!
Michael B gave the first real answer.
Thank you CodeMaster, for your answer, but I am referring to the first NASCAR season in 1949. There were also auto races in Rhode Island, Indianapolis, and Colorado during the time you refer to. Not dissing you, your answer was informative.
I have plenty of answers about why NASCAR is a Southern sport, but only a couple that answer my question about the races in NY and Penn. Thank you all for your answers, but I didn't ask why NASCAR is considered a Southern sport.

for the last two years the NASCAR champion has been a Californian. I bet Californians don't consider themselves southerners.

Just because they ran in the north in 1949 dosent mean it is a northern sport. The sports foundation was in North Carolina after WWII by moonshiners such as Junior Johnson. He was running moonshine and had to have a car faster and more durable than the cops. He and some buddies all had cars like his, so they decided to start racing. Bill France heard and saw this action, and then he decided to start up NASCAR.

From 1949-1970s NASCAR ran at any old track they could find. They even ran a race in Toronto. That dosent make it a canadian sport though.
