An Amherst postal carrier recently resigned from her job after being confronted with an allegation that she was stealing mail, authorities said Friday.
The inspector general’s office of the U.S. Postal Service said Apryl Silvashy, 38, resigned after investigators took her into custody and questioned her while she was delivering mail on Dec. 19.
Since September, inspectors had been monitoring Silvashy and investigating allegations that she was stealing money and checks from mail customers on her route, said Daniel Mihalko, a spokesman for the inspector general’s office.
He said the Town of Tonawanda woman had worked for the Postal Service since 1999, starting as a temporary worker. She was assigned to the Amherst postal branch on North Bailey Avenue.
As of Friday, the U.S. attorney’s office said no formal charges had been filed but added that the investigation is continuing.
Anyone in Amherst who believes their mail was stolen or improperly opened can contact the inspector general’s hotline at (888) 877-7644, Mihalko said.
