There was a time when running multiple programs at the same time could / would cause problems for your computer since they would sometimes detect and/or go after each other. For example McAfee and Norton at the same time, or SpyBot S&D and AdAware. Is this still true? Is it OK, doesn't help, or recommended to have say both McAfee and SpyBot S&D running at the same time.

I recommend running a program like McAfee or Norton Anti-Virus all of the time and periodically manually running SpyBot. McAfee and Norton both have had spyware filters included in the standard Anti-Virus products for several years. If you run both programs all of the time, you will drastically slowdown your system.

I have not used SpyBot in quite awhile, but it used to have a feature called “inoculate”. It made changes to the Registry that remained “active” even if the software was not running. If the feature still exists, use it in addition to your primary Anti-Virus software and SpyBot periodic scans.
