Read this article this morning in the paper about the Amish inventing a new source of heat that cuts down on your heating bill.

Everyone hates high heat bills. But we’re all sick and tired of turning down the thermostat and always being cold. There is really no need to heat every room in your house if you are only occupying one of them. This concept is called Zone Heating.
The beauty of Roll-n-Glow Fireless Flame is that it can easily roll from room to room so you can take the heat with you anywhere you go. For every degree you turn down your thermostat for 8 hours, you can save 1.5% on your energy bill. Take it down 5 degrees for 24 hours and you can save 20% for that same time period. When the Roll-n-Glow is turned down to the medium setting, 750 watts, or 2559 BTU's it can easily heat a average size bedroom for about 6 cents an hour.* On the high setting, 1500 watts, or 5119 BTU's it can handle a 325 sq. ft. room for about 12 cents an hour.*
ZONE HEATING VS. TRADITIONAL HEATING

TRADITIONAL HEATING - All rooms heated the same

Even people in California and Florida are flocking to get them so they may never have to turn on their furnace all winter. And since it uses less energy than a coffee maker, the potential savings are absolutely incredible.
* Variables taken into consideration. Relative size of the room. Average size room of 144sq. ft. Temperature of the zone heated room compared to the rest of the house. Insulation qualities of the house. Insulation qualities / measures taken by the occupant to isolate the heat in the zone heated room from the rest of the house. Outside weather conditions. Regional energy costs.

My mom ordered two and is giving one to me. I hope it cuts my electric bill way down since thats how I heat.

Will your mom buy one for me too since we are practically sisters??

I am always cold. I wear my jacket at work all the time and one of the doctors asked me if I have a problem with my thyroid a couple of weeks ago because I'm always wearing it. :p

I'm going to turn my heat down 1 degree and leave it like that for the month. There's 3, 8-hour segments / 24-hour day, and about 30 days / month. So 3*30*1.5 = 135% decrease in my heating bill - they'll pay me! ;)

Seriously, though - that thing's neat. We have to heat our entire house now that it's full, but we only heated the rooms we used before they were all used.

I got my Amish Heater in mail and just set it up. Seems ok so far. The true test will be if it brings down the electric bill.

Any results to share with us?

I saw this the other day in the newspaper (ad) and started looking into it. First, I wondered how the Amish were building electric heaters. Then I read that they're only building the mantle, not the heater.

I was looking at Electric Fireplaces Direct (http://www.pntrac.com/t/QkpCR0RJSkJBRENKQklEQw) yesterday. Similar idea - not sure if they have portable ones. I'd like to hook up a Kill-a-Watt (http://www.whooshusa.com/search.php?b=products&q=kill-a-watt) to one of these & compare energy usage.

My electric bill has come down $40.00 a month since I started using this. I live in a small one bedroom apartment. Basically only heating the livingroom for the birds. We don't heat the bathroom or the bedroom. The kitchen is combined with the livingroom with a bar in between. I turned my electric heat down to 55 and use the heater and it keeps it nice and toasty in here.

How did your electric go down? Or is your electric combined with your gas?

Oh, thanks for explaining. Obviously this wouldn't make my electric bill go down, but it may send my gas bill down. They're both really high :(

My brother said he just bought two Eden Pure heaters (http://www.edenpurestore.com/)because propane was going so high and they seem to be heating his place well. And cut down on his propane bill.

Oh, thanks for explaining. Obviously this wouldn't make my electric bill go down, but it may send my gas bill down. They're both really high :(

My other brother put heated floors (http://www.mywarmfloor.com/?source=google+adwords&segment=campaign1&paidkeyword={k&gclid=CIC12fSwgpICFShMGgodgHiOUw)in and said this made a big difference in his heating bills.

That's neat that you can get a price quote like that. Most companies want to suck you into their whole song and dance before you can get any type of ball park figure.

I am thinking of putting in floors like that. I was talking to my mom about ditching the carpet because it doesnt go with birds. :innocent: and going with hardwood floors and she mentioned she would put in the heated floors. So I think that company is the way to go.
