One tradition says the name "Adirondack," meaning "tree-eaters" was used derisively by Iroquois, in reference to their enemies, the Algonquians. Another theory says the name derives from an Indian term for "they of the great rocks"


Region of northern New York, dominated by the massive Adirondack park. Bounded by Lake Champlain on the east, the Saint Lawrence River on the north and the Mohawk Valley on the south

Lumbering and mining were once staples of the economy, which now relies heavily on tourism. The area includes some of the poorest sections of the state
The Adirondack Forest Preserve was created in 1885, as a response to massive cutting by the lumber barons. The Adirondack Park was established seven years later
