Jane Flasch (Batavia, N.Y.) - Ken Mistler's pet store has been hit 14 times by shoplifters, most recently in December.
"He took a flea medicine; it was inside of a box…he just decided to put his finger in it--pull it open, pull out the insert, and put in his coat pocket," Mistler explained.
The entire crime was caught on one of Mistler's 32 cameras that monitor the store and the customers.
The security video coupled with a little detective work means Charlie Smith now has some explaining to do and he's telling the entire town by wearing a sandwich board with the words “I Stole at Petsmart and Was Caught.”
Smith said, "I felt I did something wrong and I'm trying to make up for it, that's all."
Mistler said he loses $8,000 a year to shoplifters.
The flea medication Smith stole was worth less than $20, but enough to earn him an eight-hour sentence in a very public place.
Smith said, "People should pay for things instead of taking them."
The store owner said he will drop the charges after the eight hours of picketing are complete. He said he’s heard from many who support the creative solution because of the message it sends.
