Administrative Medical Office Specialist
Students are trained in Office Administration– use of MS Word to prepare memos, proper use of the telephone, fax, and copier – and the medical billing process from the use of the universal coding system, billing routine, knowledge of managed care and third party insurance to follow up of insurance reimbursement. Course will cover introduction to Coding, Medical Terminology/Human Diseases, Reimbursement Management, Fundamentals of Computerized Patient Billing and Medical Simulation (Practicum/Clinical)
Entrance Requirements: High School Diploma or GED, TABE Score 9.0 in Reading/9.0 in Math/Pre-enrollment Interview

This course will teach computer operation, keyboarding skills, word processing (MS Word), introduction to spreadsheet (MS Excel), office procedures including use of fax machine, customer service, telephone skills, and filing.
Entrance Requirement: High School Diploma or GED, TABSE Score 8.0 in Reading/ 7.0 in Math/Pre-enrollment Interview/minimum keyboarding speed of 15-20 wpm
College Prep
Provides effective learning and study techniques for anyone who is interested in pursuing a higher education. The program prepares students for college studies by developing skills in taking the CUNY Freshman Skills Assessment Test. Course work includes: critical thinking, essay writing and problem-solving techniques.
Entrance Requirements: Minimum reading level 9th grade/8th grade in Math as well as a pre-enrollment interview.
Desktop Publishing (DTP)
Students learn to design and produce professional quality documents that combine text, graphics illustrations, and photographs. DTP software provides additional tools over and above those typically found in word processing packages, including design templates, graphic manipulation tools, color schemes or libraries, and multiple page wizards and templates. For large jobs, businesses use DTP software to design publications that are camera ready, which means the files are suitable for outside commercial printing.

Direct Care Service Worker – (DCSW)
Prepares students for entry into the workplace as Direct Care Service Workers. Students are trained to work with mentally ill, and/or developmentally disabled individuals of all ages, to help them attain independence, individuality, and productivity. Students obtain their certificates for DCSW, Strategies for Crisis Intervention and Prevention (SCIP), and Approved Medication Administration Personnel (AMAP). Students also receive their certification in CPR with First Aid
Entrance Requirements: High School Diploma or GED, TABE Score 9.0 in Reading/7.0 in Math/Pre-enrollment Interview.
(EMT) Emergency Medical Technician
This program is a State Certified Basic EMT class. It consists of approximately 34 sessions of intensive study in CPR, stroke, bleeding, burns, spinal and extremity factures, trauma emergencies, medical emergencies and transportation of the patient to the hospital. Students who pass the class will then take a New York State Practical and Written Examination. Passing these state exams will certify the student as a New York State Emergency Medical Technician, allowing them to work on an ambulance in New York.
Entrance Requirements: HS Diploma or GED equivalent; TABE 9.0 in reading, 8.0 in math; NYS driver’s license or Learner’s Permit with your road test scheduled before the registration date of this course. No prior criminal convictions.
High School Equivalency Program (English and Spanish)
The High School Equivalency Program offers participants the opportunity to prepare for all parts of the GED exam. Students receive intensive and targeted instruction in mathematics, language arts/writing, and specialized reading skills to attain the necessary competencies to be successful on the GED exam. Teacher instruction, group activities, and individual participation are all used as part of the instructional process. In addition, computer assisted instruction is utilized for remedial or supplemental activities. Participants who successfully complete the program will be eligible to take the GED exam on-site. Upon receiving the GED diploma, participants have the opportunity to enroll in a vocational program.
Program Length: 10 weeks
Entrance Requirements: TABE (adult basic education test administered by the Bronx EOC) 9.0 in reading 7.0 in math. 19 years of age or older (17 or 18 years of age eligible if out of school for a minimum of 1 year)
Medical Assistant
Prepares students for entry into the workplace as Medical Assistants or Patient Care Specialists. Students are trained to perform both administrative and clinical functions primarily in ambulatory settings such as medical offices and clinics. Course will cover Medical Office Procedures, Anatomy & Physiology, Phlebotomy/EKG and Medical Terminology (Practicum/Clinical).
Entrance Requirements: High School Diploma or GED, TABE Score 9.0 in Reading/8.0 in Math/Pre-enrollment Interview.

Prepares the student for licensing as a NYS Registered Security Guard. Students receive the mandatory 8 Hr. Pre-assignment Training and the 16 Hr. On the Job Training Certificates. They also receive training that prepares them to take and pass the NYC Fire Department Certificate of Fitness as a Fire Guard; further training is received in Investigative Memo Writing. Placement assistance is provided.
Entrance Requirements: TABE test in Reading & Math: Must meet New York State licensing requirements, which include fingerprinting, and a background check. No felony convictions. High School Diploma or GED. Must have a desire to gain employment.
Vocational Academic Preparation Lab (VAPL)
The purpose of the Vocational Academic Preparation Lab (VAPL) at the Bronx EOC is to offer an opportunity to those prospective students who have not achieved the TABE grade level requirements to enter a training program. VAPL accepts students who scored up to two grade levels below what is required for their desired program.
The VAPL experience is designed to enable students to improve their TABE scores and prepare for the rigorous training program of their choice. The program includes several different classes. Career preparation starts here, so there is an overlap and reinforcement of skills taught throughout the different courses.
The teacher led courses of VAPL include Reading and Writing, Math, Employment Development Seminar, Interview Preparation and Practice, and Support Activities. The individualized courses that students will participate in with the guidance from a Lab Assistant include Computer Assisted Instructor and Individualized Support.
