Far from simple exercises in geometric patterning, the 25 quilts in this exhibition represent a free-wheeling tradition in which improvisation, asymmetry, and experimentation are the norm. Selected by Janet Berlo, University of Rochester professor of art history, from the collection of the International Quilt Study Center, these quilts explore the once-radical proposition that some 19th-century American women were “painting with fabric.” Ranging in date from about 1825 to 1999, the quilts were made by artists both known and unknown, all of whom share an essential quality: the desire to push the boundaries of their medium in their own time.

This exhibition was organized by the International Quilt Study Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In Rochester, it is underwritten by Lynne Lovejoy.

To Get More Info: 585-328-3103

Details:
Since Heartland started we have had quite a few Guitar Wizards on our stage. John Renbourne, Jim Henry, Kinloch Nelson, Harvey Reid and, of course, Wendell Ferguson. From the time we first heard him at Toronto's Winterfest we were amazed at his abilities, and we were not alone. He's a six time winner of Canadian Country Music Association's "Guitar Player of the Year" and a two time Juno nominee. He's toured with Shania Twain, The Dixie Chicks, Patty Loveless, Gordon Lightfoot, Sylvia Tyson, James Keelaghan, The Arrogant Worms, Vance Gilbert, just to name a few.

But the brilliant guitar work is only half of Wendell's talents. His own writing reveals a very, very funny man with a devastatingly pointed sense of humor. His take on bad drivers, oversexed boaters, fiddles and Christmas songs will leave you gasping for breath because you can't laugh that hard and breathe at the some time. Just ask anyone who saw him last year - you can tell who they are because they're still laughing.

Male & Female will survey photography from the 19th century to the present and will show not only instances of exaggerated and stereotyped male and female difference but also images of ambiguous and deceptive gender. The exhibition will include work by recognized photographic artists as well vernacular examples in the forms of cabinet cards from an extensive series depicting early vaudeville and music hall stars.

Details:

This exhibition of more than 40 portraits from the George Eastman House photography collection explores particular ways gender has been presented to the camera with a special emphasis on the performative aspects that photography encourages. Many of the ways we identify and define gender are based on visual clues. They may be such secondary sexual characteristics as facial hair or its lack, or they may be culturally determined elements such as costume, stance or activities.

Calendar: MAG
Event Location: Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607
Cost: Free with Gallery admission.
To Get More Info: 585-276-8900

Details:

Cost: Free with Gallery admission.
