Gates, N.Y. -- Two men are in jail for allegedly robbing several area convenience stores throughout Monroe County.
Joseph Poupart, 25, of Greece, and Ryan Assini, 18, of Brighton are charged with four counts of robbery and first degree attempted robbery. They are accused of holding up the convenience stores at gunpoint, and in one case, firing a shot to scare a clerk.
Police say the pair robbed convenience stores in Brighton, Gates, Henrietta and Greece.
They were caught Saturday night after police say the suspects returned to the 7-Eleven in Gates to hold it up a second time. Police were watching from across the street and apprehended the suspects.
Police chiefs from several towns say these arrests are a relief because the robberies were becoming more dangerous each time.
“It was happening all around town, all around the county. There was a pattern to it. We were concerned that rather than this being a random act or a one-time act, this was something that was going to continue and would continue to present a real threat to our communities if we didn’t take some action... We were alarmed that the longer this continued, the more probably that someone would get hurt,” said Chief David DiCaro of the Gates Police Department.
No one was hurt in the robberies. Police say the suspects got away with about $100 from each robbery.
