if you mean "discovered" it was discovered by Henry Hudson by accident in 1609, sailing for the Dutch East India Company. Hudson was English, but working for a Dutch company, which is why European settlement was first done by the Dutch.

after, of course, the Native American tribes had lived in the area for a long time, the French explored some of the upriver country of current-day Albany and Rensselaer counties around 1540.
