I am about to graduate with a degree early childhood education/special education (my B.A. is in psychology but I have some biology and chemistry credits), but I am almost certain I do not want to teach a regular class at this level; I want to specialize. I hated my student field placements but I loved teaching science! I was looking for schools that offered Masters degrees in elementary school science but I couldn't find any; most are directed at grades 7-12; I'd be teaching Pre-K-6. Can anyone tell me, step-by-step, how I would go about qualifying for/becoming a science teacher in elementary school in New York City (or northern NJ) and if there is a degree program and statewide exam out there let me know? Thank you for your serious replies:)
I can't become a NYC teaching fellow because I have more than 18 credits of a Master's degree in education

In alot of NY schools 6th grade is considered middle school and they have a specific "science class". Elementary school students do not switch classes and therefore the teachers are required to teach all subjects... although you can focus alot of your curriculum on science. Check into some of the charter schools, most of them specialize in certain areas of curriculum... Good Luck!!
