I finally got a new computer! http://www.bigdan.us/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif I forgotten what it’s like being at the helm of an up to date computer. Surprisingly, I wound up walking out of Wally World with a system. It came with an awesome 22″ wide screen monitor. This thing is so huge, I’m afraid I might fall into the computer. It’s simply awesome for web pages to load as fast as my connection will allow rather than Firefox locking up on rendering.
Let’s get to some specs:
2.5 GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 dual-core processor 4800+
3 GB of DDR2 system memory (expandable to 4) I’ll max it out down the line.
500 GB HD
Light scribe DVD-RW +-==- whatever it burns from DVD RW double layer down.
Nvidia Graphics card.
Media Card Reader
Plenty of USB ports, even 2 firewire ports.
Some sort of 7 channel audio card. The two speakers on the monitor are okay, I bought aftermarket speakers with a sub for $20
Surprisingly, I’m liking Vista. It came with home premium, which is pretty darn nice. Did you know Vista can partition it’s own disk while it’s runny? Ubuntu installed in the time it took me to burn the CD on my old computer. Luckily contrary to what the installer said, it detected Vista and left a GRUB entry for it.
My only beef’s so far are: The keyboard seems “flat”, I keep making typos because of it, well more than normal. http://www.bigdan.us/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif Despite having a Nvidia grapics card, it still draws graphics memory from the system RAM. WTF?
Anyhow Ubuntu ran on this perfectly out of the box, I installed the proprietary Nvidia driver to enable desktop effects. For what ever reason Firefox under Ubuntu still renders slower than under Windows.. Although because of the speed, comparative to my old computer it’s hard to notice.
Just so you know, I’m upgrading from a Pentium 4 1.7 Ghz with 512 MB RAM so it’s a pretty drastic change. http://www.bigdan.us/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif Anyone else buy a new computer or hardware lately? Come on it’s tax refund time, surely some of you have. http://www.bigdan.us/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_razz.gif

The most I can do is am waiting for two used laptops to come in that are being donated to Kids Defense Team. I think they are 1.8's I can't afford newbies.

Congrats Dan! I know what you mean, that feeling of being able to corrupt a clean system is fun. I liked Vista too, I was surprised I did when I got the new Bad Boy a few months ago, after hearing so many negative things about it. Of course I've lost custody of the new computer to Scott, who now claims Vista does crash more now that he's run it a couple months, but its probably the sites he's on LOL!
