First time visitor to NYC and will be using the subways for transportation. What is the best way to understanding the subway systems if you have NEVER used them?

I have not used them either, but here is a good quality New York City Subway Map (http://www.nycsubway.org/maps/route.html).

For a first time visitor you're better off taking buses. The subway can be very confusing for people that don't know them. If you do decide to take the subway stay off the F & N lines after midnight it's very easy for tourist to get robbed on those lines.

I'd recommend taking the F line full circle during the day as a good portion of it is above ground you see some of the city that way. The F line runs between Manhatten & Brooklyn.

Other than that if you have you're heart set on taking the subway. Let us know where you'll be and where you want to go we'll map something out for you here.

Also, it'd be a nice idea to hop a path train and go see Hoboken it's a beautiful city.
