What Security software do you use on your PC?
I am currently using Microsoft One Care. It seems to be less resource intensive then Symantec Internet Security and it can be downloaded from Microsoft.com and includes a 90 day trial. The two negatives that I have noticed are the lack of junk mail filter and lack of website ad filter. I use Outlook’s junk mail filter and don’t really need a second program sorting my e-mail, but I know several users who don’t have a filter built in to their mail clients and the lack of filter makes it difficult to recommend the software. I also used to like the website ad filter that was included in Symantec Internet Security. The last time I checked it was now distributed as a free add-on. It removed known ad-bars and blinking, rolling, and otherwise distracting advertisements from websites. I wish One Care had this feature or it was offered as a standalone application by Symantec. Let me know what you think about Security software and I will continue to add to this techtip. . . .

I have a free 3 computer license version of McAfee Security Center (http://us.mcafee.com/root/landingpages/afflandpage.asp?affid=101&lpname=14444&cid=41725&siteID=qBNKlhsBsB4-Et1czcil%2FwhPspToRvc6%2FA).

I get it free for using Scottrade (http://www.scottrade.com/). (If you want an account please PM me (http://www.discussny.com/private.php?do=newpm&u=8) and I'll refer you in, 3 free trades for both of us)

If I did not have this one for free I'd likely only have the free version of AVG on my computer.

McAfee works fine I guess. The only problem of mine that I think is related to the McAfee is that I get a long pause when downloading files. I think it is the McAfee scanning them as I'm downloading them. I download often, for example 15 files for the new games are the arcade at a time, so it does get annoying having that issue pretty much every day but I live with it. It's terrible, I know! :laughing6:

I recently switched from avg to avast!:
http://www.avast.com/

I haven't really been using it long enough to write an adequate review, but so far it seems about the same with slightly less resource utilization, a much better modular design and MUCH more user control in the free version.

(due to being on xp 64bit platform, the choices are limited, many of the "main stream" versions don't work well or at all on the windows 64 bit kernel, such as Norton (however, it should be noted the symantec corp version does), MacAffee, etc.)

I was just about to ask what Tech Guy thinks of Avast. Like Yukon, I too recently switched from AVG to Avast mainly because downloading updates from AVG was becoming painfully slow.

So far no complaints but then gain I follow basic internet rules, don't click on links from people you don't know etc.

I like AVG. I have not tried Avast yet. Is the free version a full security suite (anti-virus, spyware, firewall, etc) or just an anti-virus-app? I am always looking for free software to recommend to people who don’t want to pay the $50 a year for the retail apps.

Avast is just an AV app from what I see.
