Hello,
Do you like to go camping?
What is your favorite but uncommon thing to bring camping with you?

Yes, if it's not raining. Favorite but uncommon thing that I bring? Probably my stove-top Coleman drip coffee maker (http://www.cabelas.com/prod-1/0053372518231a.shtml).

I went camping constantly growing up with the fam and friends but now I've become this total nature wuss. I can't stand animals lurking in the dark or the constant bug issue. Not sure where this transformation started exactly...but if I can borrow Eric's coffeemaker...maybe I'll reconsider, thats so cool!

Oh I heard about that coffee maker. I didn't realize it was that nice. I was envisioning really bad coffee. I bet it makes great coffee. I need one of those. That is all I miss when I am camping is my coffee in the morning.

I find that there are a few crucial things to bring camping. 1 is rope for hanging clothes and for dog tie outs. Next would be cheap 3 mil plastic sheeting for x-tra rain protection. By using the rope and the plastic rain is not a problem.:)

This isn't my favorite, but I find it essential. I bring boxes of large and small ziplock baggies. I put everything in them. Bags of chips, hamburger and hot dog rolls, graham crackers, and any other dry food that I want to keep that way. They are handy to put things in that are muddy or dirty that you don't want to get all over everything else that you packed away. They are great to store leftovers in (hamburgers, hotdogs, even things like baked beans and then you can stick them right back in the cooler)

Putting them all in one ready to go plastic supply bin that can be quickly tossed in the truck is handy too. :)

I'm a primitive camper. I prefer no electric, and the only "gadgets" are my GPS and a digital camera.
Beer in cans works for me. :cheers2:

Doesn't look like it comes with pieces, though - more like a printed gameboard on a table. But it has drink holders underneath!

The baggies really save space. Most people would have plastic containers to keep leftovers in and they take up too much room in the cooler. The baggies are handy for everything.

Love camping! I love my Chuck Box...it's a little kitchenette complete with a Lazy Susan and paper towel holders.
Bungee cords...loads of em! They're very versatile! ;)
I have not mastered the coffee on the campfire....I did learn the ice cube trick though....drop it into coffee and all the grounds go to the bottom.
We were looking at getting a membership to Gravel Ponds (http://www.gravelponds.com/). Something always breaks or goes wrong everytime we get close to submitting the membership fee....:banghead:

It's a known fault with the cannon powershot camera that I have.
You can put brand new batteries in and sometimes it reports them as dead.
They work fine when you put them in anything else.
Cannon knows it's a problem, but I didn't call within a year of getting the camera so they basically said screw me or I have pay 1/2 the price of the camera to get it repaired.
I use rechargeables now and take my chances.

I had that happening to my camera. Fresh lithium batteries, 3 pictures and then dead.
Then, I bought a memory card and put that in. I haven't changed the batteries in 4 months and never had a dead battery message appear.

if you have a decent tent the temp will be around 50*+ depending on what temp it is outside. A lot of people don't realize that sleeping bag rating isn't really the temperature outside, its the temperature that you're using the bag at . . . not to mention its really just a guide anyhow.
In other words with a typical 3 season Eureka or similar tent in 30* nights (mid-late fall in Roch), your body heat will keep the inside temp around 50* or a little higher depending on how many people, etc. (be sure to close all window/vents). You can easily get away with a bag carrying a comfort rating of "60*" ("a summer only") bag. You might get a little chilly, throw an extra blanket between the bottom of your bag and your sleeping pad, you should should be fine.
I spent a lot of years hiking, camping, etc. It was typical for me to pack less gear when camping in the winter than summer. Winter you go with a couple of guys, get some cross country skiing or hiking in. Often I wouldn't bother bringing a tent at all, favoring a simple tarp I would generally hang in a lean-to configuration. While not nearly as warm as a tent its a hell of a lot lighter when you're carrying it ;). Summer you go car camping bringing: wives, children, dogs, coolers full of beer etc. :).

"there was one time at band camp" no I'm j/k. Actually especially in wintertime the following is very important: You body sweats whether you are warm or cold etc., that doesn't when you sleep, in fact in most people it increases. When camping in cold weather that moisture will biuld up in your clothes and or sleeping bag and make you even colder. It is VERY important to sleep wearing as few clothes as you can compfortably get by with. In other worsd you don't have to sleep have to sleep to sleep in your birthday suit, but certainly try to only wear shorts and maybe a tank top. If you don't have a mummy bag or don't like to put head inside, know that up to 90% of your body's heat is generally lost through the head (or so I had been taught). If you can do it, sleep with a knit or other similar winter hat on.
I once woke up in the middle of the night with terrible urge to go pee and I couldn't find my flashlight. Without my flashlight I couldn't find my boots . . . being a good camper and subscribing to the above I was wearing nothing but boxers. . . . I decided to go for it. I stepped barefoot out into about 8-10" of snow somewhere in the southern Adirondaks, ran my obligatory 50', "spelled my name" in the dark and ran back and took a flying leap into my sleepinbg bag. OWWWWW, that hurt. I landed square on my flashlight! What would you do? I think you'd do what I did, turned it on and looked at my poor feet. They were a nice crimson the beginning frostbite. I shoved them and the rest of my body into my sleeping bag and went back to sleep :). By morning I seemed to be fine.
Moral of the story? Always put your flashlight somewhere you can easily find it in the dark :).

The word Survivor made me think of the season premier of Survivor Thursday night. One of the Survivors is a Olympic gold medalist for running. But she sure has sucked so far on Survivor. She blamed it on her heavy tennis shoes and a dress. Why the heck do they dress in a dress and shirt and tie when going into the jungle. One guy went to tribal counsel twice in his shirt in tie.

Empty the bottle in the morning, when you go to pee again. Then recycle it.
I was glad to see that Lake Erie State Park had recycling bins... Letchworth did not last time I was there.:stompfoot:
