yes, the High Peaks area, specifically around lake placid--my favorite base camp in that area is the Adirondack Loj just outside of town, the trailheads to many of the best hikes start here(mt marcy, algonquin, etc) but there are others just a short drive away which are more moderate (cascade mtn, phelps, ampersand, etc), if you only had one chance to get to the adk's this is the area you want to see, plus olympic village in lake placid is really fun to see
