I want to take a break and get out of the city, be in forests, go hiking or canoing, you know -- relax in a non-urban environment. But I don't own a car and on my budget I can't rent one. This is a short weekend trip: leaving Saturday morning, returning to the city Sunday night. I've heard the Poconos, Montauk, and the Catskills are okay, but my searches on the web for detailed information about them are fruitless. Ideas, suggestions?

Man , This has best answer written all over it. Take Martz-Trailways from the Port Authority to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. the trip will take about two hours
You can figure out a loop hike using the Appalachian Trail
Get in touch with the NPS for more details @ nps.gov

There are hikes along the hudson on the palisades, some of them are brutal. Lots of ups and downs. You can get to the south end by taking the 158 bus from prot authority to ft lee, ask the driver to let you off by the entrance to the park and walk all the way down to ross's dock. This can be a day trip. For bus info go to http://www.newjerseytransit.com
for hikes in the area got to http://www.nynjtc.com
enjoy :)
