I am planning on going to NYC in March of 2008. I get a really good discount at Marriot hotels so I am going to stay at the Courtyard in West Orange, NJ ($79/night). That is not final because I am still looking for something cheap but not trashy or scary. Is this convenient to NYC. What is the best way to get there without a car because I am flying there. Does the subway go from West Orange to NYC? Thanks.

The subway does not go out of NYC. There is a train to Newark but I don't know how you would connect to West Orange.

there is an NJ transit station in West Orange, I have frequently gotten on a train from there, its about 10 minutes from my buddy's house. From there you can either take a train to Hoboken, NJ (about 25-30 mins and then a 7 minute PATH train to the WTC, its easier then going through Penn) or about 30-40 minute train into Penn. I don't know how far that Hotel is from the train station, but none of the towns here in NJ are very large, I'd assume a quick phone call to the hotel will confirm if they have a shuttle to take you the train station and back or you could take a cab.
