Hello,
Does the placement of a basement dehumidifier matter as long as you have the space around it clear?

As long as it has air around it so that it can breathe. I would say a good foot to foot and half away from the wall.

My plumber told me to keep it away from the sump-pump, or it'll never turn off. So, unfortunately, instead of hooking a hose up to it, I now have to empty the bucket on a regular basis.

That's super if you have one that does not leak.
My bucket was fine until the hose got hooked up.
There is no undo button for putting a hole in the bucket.
I'm stuck looking for a second on on craigs list or something now.

or get a longer hose. You should be able to use a garden hose.

The problem is that it leaks where the hose hooks up to the container.
Crappy short soft plastic for screwing on the hose.

You should also be able to order a bucket direct from the manufacturer

He told me that once you break the seal for the hose on the one here, you lose the bucket option. I told him that's stupid.

yeah, my old one was like that. My new one has a plug that can screw in / out. I used to have the hose hooked up, but not anymore.

Ours uses the hose hook up to the sump pump area too. I couldn't keep up with the bucket emptying, seemed to fill more then once a day at times...but maybe my memory is wrong.

It's still leaking just a little bit, but a new hose that is cut down to the exact size needing and making sure that is is flat seems to have also done the trick. I also stuck a fan down there for now to keep the air circulating.

Having great experience in this. placement does matter. You want to maximize the air flow so that the moisture laden air has a chance to unload its H2O. Using a fan helps move the air.
