I'm told generally speaking that updating your kitchen and bathrooms are some of the best home improvements that you can make to increase the value of your home. What are some other recommended updates? A deck? A finished basement?

The bathroom is most important. OOPS I see you already said that.

From a resale point of view, kitchen is the way to go...however...

If you are looking at staying put, then windows/insulation/heating are the way to go. You will save money (more efficient, less drafty, etc) and you will recoup your investment (it may take awhile, but figure the difference between your heating bills before and after, divide by the cost of the improvements, and you see how long it will take to get your money back).

Last year we did a deck and handicap ramp.

I am hoping one day to rip out this UGLY carpet and put down hardwood floors. Having several birds and carpet just doesnt cut it.

Hardwood floors are great!

My theory about no vacuuming and only needing to dust bust around the edges gets laughed at though.

Thats my theory also. Try cleaning up after 20 some birds, vacuuming a carpet just doesn't get the job done. :banghead:
