Ah middle school. How terrifying. You go from top of the world (5th grade) to lowest rank.

My tips... teachers are there to help you, but they'll only help if you ask. You're getting to be more independent so they're not going to make sure you write down all of the assignments, but if you're not sure of something, they'll be happy to help.

And if you can't get your locker open, make sure you're trying to open the right one. Speaking from personal experience.

Good luck!

^I ALWAYS forgot my locker combination. It was bad! I had to have them reprogram my lock to like 1-2-3 or something dumb LOL

Middle school was a blast for me but I totally agree with Eric, always realize no matter how mean a teacher may seem they will help you out when asked! I had the hardest time with Math, I still hate it but I asked one day for help, went in during a study hall and it was amazing what a simple one-on-one help did for me!

Second advice from my experience, never get THAT into any boy. Man you can miss our on alot of fun with friends if you get all tied up into guys. There not worth it! That would be my biggest regret and one I will attempt to tell my kids to avoid...if they listen or not I guess would be another thing.

Are you excited???

6th grade is middle school? Down here middle school starts at 7th grade. :)

From what I remember of middle school you've got lots more freedom and of course that brings more responsibility. You'll change classes on a bell schedule instead of having teachers escort you. 99.9% of the teachers are nice people and as Eric and Kim said will help ya if you ask however they typically won't baby you.. So just speak up and ask for help. :) You might even get to pick some of your own classes too which is always fun.

Have fun and a great time in the new school! :)

Last but not least don't do anything Kim did in middle school. :D

Be yourself, don't let anyone talk you into doing anything that you are not suppose to do. If someone picks on you, most likely there are so insecure about themselves, they are picking on someone else to make themselves look good so ignore them. Remember that you are a special person and noone can take that away from you.

Raven's advice is definitely good! Just be yourself. Just like Raven said, if someone teases you they are insecure about themselves and who they are. If they were secure in who they are, they wouldn't have to make themselves feel good by bringing someone else down.

Stick tight with your good friends and don't bother with anyone else. Have a good time and as your mother, STAY OUTTA TROUBLE!!! I don't want any calls from the school...no wait....wrong kid. :p

In my district middle school started in 6th grade but now starts at 5th grade.

What to do in 6th grade?

Learn what they are teaching you, have fun, and make lots of new friends.

There is nothing wrong with being smart and having smart friends. People might try to tell you otherwise at your age. Do not listen to them. You'll be better off later in life paying attention now. The way I look at it is that you can work hard for a couple years while in school, get a great job, and hopefully have a nicer and fun life after the school years are done, or you can goof off for a few years in school, and have to work harder the rest of your life.

Middle school for me was 4th-8th grade.

Advise above is all great! 6th grade was really tough for me because it is when you have to show a lot more independence and responsibility. Work hard and stay organized and on top of all assignments. Have fun and be active in sports and groups that interest you. I wish I would have gotten into sports sooner, that's one regret I have. By high school, teams were pretty much "set" and hard to break into by someone with little experience.....

You are so right about that. I started going to my high school in 10th grade after I moved and wanted to play softball. I swear the teams were picked before tryouts. :(

One day you will realize old people give good advice, you just don't know it yet. :) Just be happy and don't cave to peer pressure and you will do fine.

My advice is to try to stay as far away from drama as possible. It really sucks when arguments with your friends or rumors get in the way of your schoolwork and stuff like that.

You know, you're a bit strange Jazzy. Most people are really scared for the first day in a new school. I know I was on the first day at Apollo, and then last year at Arcadia. But you're soooo excited, hopefully your sixth grade year is everything that you're expecting it to be.

I've generally hated all school. It's nothing special.. You get to meet teacher's on power trips, thought. That's always quite lovely

well, i'm nervous not scared but im also excited. im only nervous really about three things but they are very crucial (sp?) when your in middle school and high school. the first is forgeting my locker combination alot like kaos did. i also don't want to forget the class numbers, what class i go to next or where the classroom is. i really don't want to forget my bus number! at least if you forget your locker combination or classroom number you can get help! you can if you forget your bus number but by that time you get help the bus probably left!!!!

Well, as for the combination, I'm obviously not the best person to ask lOl But the schedule, classes and bus will become just another pattern by the second week, that I do remember. I was always getting lost...sometimes on purpose maybe but soon you'll even know people in your classes and it will all be a blast! When do you guys start? We start on the 3rd here.

I forgot my locker combo after christmas break last year and I didn't know where I was supposed to go for spanish on the fourth day of school- I lost my schedule and I hadn't been there on the second day. Hope and I also couldn't find our bus on the first day of school so we asked and found out that it was at the other end of the parking lot...her dad drove us home. You shouldn't worry too much about forgetting where your classrooms are though, you should pretty much have it memorized by the second week of school, after that it's a piece of cake.

My boys both liked middle school..well, one still does. The hardest thing for them to get used to was keeping track of what homework they had since it wasn't all organized for them and they were supposed to write it down from each class. (HEY....maybe they didn't WANT to know what their homework assignments were...never thought of that!!!....)

They got a little confused changing classes for the first couple of days, but it got better and they liked that a lot. Squeezing things into a tiny locker was a a challenge, and its a good idea to buy a combination lock and practice how to do it at home to be sure you know how.

And, don't try to wear skimpy shirts! The boys don't like it as much as you may imagine and think the girls are "Stupid" when they do! Seriously. Yup. that's middles school boys for ya! Way less mature than the girls in many ways.\
Have a happy school year!!

The first year we had lockers with combination locks on them was 7th Grade. It took me over a month to learn how to work the stupid combination lock. I knew the numbers but didn't get the spin backwards and pass 0 twice thing. My locker was right near the math department and one of the math teachers who was a funny guy said "Geez Dan you skipped my math class to take advanced algebra and you cannot even work your lock..I'm going to see if I can get you put in my remedial class." LOL

Prior to that we had lockers but were allowed to use regular key locks, provided we gave the front office a copy of the key. This was before all the school security scares, I don't know why they mandated we use school supplied locks other than the fact that they had a master key.

I don't remember if we had to give our master lock combination to the school, but I know for sure that if they suspected a problem they cut off the lock.

we didn't have locks or lockers in 6th grade...
for that matter, after I quit a crappy school and transferred to a great one, we didn't have them in High School either-- we had those little "cubbies" like lil kids do, the whole school was on "the honor system," leaving everything from music stuff to money in there unsupervised... in the entire time I was a student there, once a kid swiped another kid's bagged lunch, that was all... :D
