I started writing a reply to a comment on my 9-month update, but it got to be too long. So here’s a brief summary of my fitness routine:
Fitness
I’ve been doing plyometrics (http://www.netnagel.com/2007/04/plyometrics.html) twice a week and (lately) lifting 3 days / week. When the weather is nicer (not too hot, not too cold, not too dark) I run about 3.5 miles. Ideally, I’d do plyometrics twice a week, run twice a week and lift twice a week. Oh, and I try to bike to the gym, but I don’t like biking in the dark (almost got hit by a car one day).
Having someone to workout with is key. There’s a group of us that keep each other motivated, and harass one another if someone skips a workout. The trainer we work with pushes us hard, and I wouldn’t be where I am if it weren’t for him. I think his military background helps… I need someone calling me a cheese-puff when I want to quit.
The other key ingredient in getting fit is time. Stick with it. It took me 9 months to do what I did. The first day the weather passes 50 degrees, don’t decide to go to the gym to get fit by summer. If you want to be fit for next summer, you should’ve started last summer.
Dieting
As for dieting, I’m horrible at that. There’s a few reasons why… healthy food is more expensive than processed stuff, I have kids in the house, and my wife loves to bake.
That being said, I do have a few diet tips:

Drink lots of water
Eat every 3 hours
Eat with your left hand. It’ll slow you down. Take a bite, but down your fork, swallow, take a sip of water, repeat
Use the small plate. You’ll put less food on your plate, and it’ll look fuller
Right after dinner, brush, floss and rinse. If you’re like me and hate the flossing routine, you’ll be far less likely to eat at nightAny of those fad diets or pills or whatever all have fine print: “diet and exercise are recommended”. Save your money, skip the other stuff and just go with diet and exercise.
I’ve followed Weight Watchers before and learned a lot from it. In my opinion, it’s not a diet but rather an education on how to pick the right foods to eat. It also gets you in the habit of writing down everything you eat, which is key when you’re dieting. You don’t have to run out & join the program - look for Weight Watchers Starter Kits on eBay (http://www.netnagel.com/wp-content/plugins/wp-affiliate-pro.php?id=10). It’s all you need.
My final tips are to stay off the scale! Get a trainer to measure your body fat and weigh you every 3 months or so. If I only used a scale, I would have been very depressed that I work out very hard, and have only a 1-pound difference to show. However, since I was getting my body fat measured, I now know I replaced 16 pounds of fat with muscle. If you need to, use photos. Since you see yourself in the mirror every day, you won’t notice the difference, but looking back 3 months at a time, you’ll be able to see it.
I once told Steve, “Money doesn’t come easy, or else everyone would be rich (http://www.techquilashots.com/2007/08/16/money-doesn%e2%80%99t-come-easy-or-else-everyone-would-be-rich/)“. The same goes for fitness:
Getting in shape doesn’t come easy, or else everyone would have the body of their dreams.
Stick with it, and good luck!

I hear you on the kids in the house and wife that loves to bake.. although i am the wife that loves to bake :hungry:
My husband has been all healthy the past 4 months and he does similar to you, working out nearly every day just switching his weights routine and cardio through the days and eating every 3 hours. He is rarely hungry and doesn't even snack it amazes me how good he is about it. I like eating some nuts before a meal too. A handful of cashews or pistachios real gives you a fuller feeling and helps prevent over eating! I thought it was a good tip I'd share.

Thanks for the tip about nuts before a meal - that's especially useful this time of year. Before you go to a holiday party, eat an apple. It'll fill you up some, and you'll eat less junk at the party.

Yeah this time of year is REALLY hard. I love to bake and have certain holiday goodies. I am one of those bad people that throw the healthy living to the wind for a week. To me Christmas if the hardest holiday for good eating.

Do you floss your teeth before or after you brush?

I do mine (admittedly not as often as I should) after I brush, but before I Listerine.

Yes Ray, that is gross once every 6 months doesn't count. :Puking_Smiley:

Anyway, you should floss at least once a day before you brush. Think about it...flossing is getting food and plaque out that is stuck in between your teeth. Would you rather dislodge it and brush it away and then use Listerine to kill germs or would you rather brush your teeth and then dislodge all of the gunk and risk leaving chunks of it behind that the mouthwash might not get rid of? Brushing after you floss has a much better shot at clearing away the gunk that you dislodged by flossing. Just my .02

THIS JUST IN.....

I went to the dentist to get my teeth cleaned this morning. I told the hygeniest that there is a big debate going on whether to floss before or after you brush your teeth. She said that it is such a chore to get people to floss at all, :Puking_Smiley: that she tells them that it doesn't matter. I then told her that I do it before I brush because I am dislodging food from between my teeth and don't want to leave it there, I feel it should be brushed away. She said that actually I am correct and that is the way she does it but if she can get people to floss at all she lets them do it whenever they want.

It's official, floss first people!

I don't floss anymore. Last time I did I had a big chunk of my tooth come out (old filling) freaked me out so much that I can't get myself to floss anymore. Hopefully I'll look good in dentures when I'm older LOL
