I know a great deal about the market, and have earned alot ( market simulation). But in those games you start off with sums such as 500,000 and 1,000,000+. I personally can not start off with that much, so I was wondering what you guys think is a good number to start off with.

Thanks

Anything that you can afford. The more money in the higher your possible return but dont put any money in that you cant afford to potentially lose.

$10K is probably a good amount to start with.

Stay away from the < $2 stocks. Use an inexpensive online broker where transaction fees are less than $15. Do not do less than $1000 positions or the transactions fees will eat your profits away. Each position should be less than 10% of your total amount available for trading. Your trading amount should be a small portion of your total investment worth. Do not put more into your trading amount than you can afford to loose! The $10K stated by Senator above would meet these requirements. Good Luck. Having luck is executing with a prepared mind.

Are you talking about investing (buy-and-hold-for-20-years)?

Or speculating (day-trades, or buy and sell within a month)?

To invest, some mutual funds will let you start with as little as $2,500

To speculate, I would suggest you have a minimum of $10,000. Otherwise, the brokerage fees will kill you.

Only invest what you can afford to loose. Ensure you have a exit strategy.
