Default Amazon Tax

A while ago I thought about moving, but with WNY in my top 4, I decided to stay.

However, now NY is taxing all Amazon.com purchases shipped to NY addresses because Amazon has affiliates that live in NY. Other merchants took notice, and Overstock.com just dumped all of their NY affiliates. If other merchants follow suit, I won't be able to be in business here!

Michigan, here I come!

NY loves the taxes huh? So you won't be in business cause you just do affiliate products or something, sorry clueless to pretty much everyones work here. If you're a coder can't you make enough money with that? They seem to be high in demand, atleast in my circle of clients etc.

Being a coder means I have clients, which I don't want. Being an affiliate means I choose the merchants I work with and the products I promote. And I don't have to work as much, either - once something is up & running, it's a money-maker.

Luckily I don't work with Overstock.com, but I'm sure others will soon follow.

I hear you on the client thing, although as much as I complain about mine, they really are good people. I am not much of an affiliate seller, we do some financial products, but our main money makers would be our membership sites and advertising of course. I love my adsense account too LOL

I will be starting to do some affiliate marketing on a new site thats about to launch, but I'm really not a fan of affiliate stuff. When I started out in this biz I guess it just annoyed me and I've never given it another try...until now :P

Can you get a Michigan PO Box and do business from that address?

No, they'd catch on, especially since I file NYS Income tax

Why not just start an LLC out of Nevada(cheapest place to do it anyway) run your business through the LLC and then you wouldn't have to worry about business tax in NY. Thats how alot of people I know do it.

But the LLC will have an employee in NY (me). As you can see, their definition of a tax nexus is very broad.
