Default Driving through the Catskills in New York, scenic route? Places to eat?

Hello! I'll be driving through the Catskills in New York later this week. 1) What would be a better scenic route: a) south of the Ashokan Reservoir along the 28A up to the 28 or b) north of the Ashokan Reservoir along the 28 all the way? (After this, we plan to drive along the 212, up around the Cooper Lake, hitting the Glasco Turnpike, before heading back east to the 87) 2) Also, can you recommend a good rustic style restaurant or diner for some morning grub along this route...and maybe a not to be missed site? Any help, or even other suggestions for a scenic drive would help. I've never done this before!!!
