Cool Bridging the gap

This thread can be used when someone uses a word that is totally different than what you are used to calling something.

For example, I taught Phoebe that what she calls a hair slide is called a barrette here.

The word that made me think of making this thread was one that Sulu used. She said she left her bags for the grocery store in the boot of her car???? I am assuming that is what we call the trunk of the car.

In the U.S., this is a boot: Bridging the gap-boot.jpg

LMAO I have come across so many words on this site that are different, and sometimes catch myself before I write it - and change the word to what you use. But I didn't know you didn't say BOOT for the trunk of the car!

I know this is minor ... but you say Mom ... and we say Mum.

Yeah a boot is pictured above. Stop changing your words. Write it your way in your reply and then link it here. I like learning things like that.

I was thinking the same thing as Phoebe when I read "fanny pack" - Crue Fest 2009 at Darien Lake

I already knew about the name as I have a Canadian brother-in-law and we used to laugh about it years ago. We call it a "bum bag" in Australia. Not sure what they call it in the UK? (And "fanny" has a completely different meaning here)

Ok this just in: a fanny is a vagina. (in places other than the U.S.)

No wonder you all thought we were crazy saying that. LOL

One of the things I've noticed cropping up in here from time to time is the money difference. If something costs me $10 it only costs you about $8.60. Something I should have realised when I was checking out the Apple ipod touch on the American website, and thought it was a good price.
