Why do so many people visit or want to visit new york city?

Im from south america and living in new york for 22 years and I love the city espicially in the summer time its extremely alive and energetic. But I was just wondering how come so many people wnt to visit here just from seeing it on t.v and movies etc.?

well, many say NYC is the capital of the world. frankly I feel thats more than a little ethnocentric, but there is a huge UN building here amongst many other things, and it can be argued at least that its the cultural center of the US. it could also be very easily argued that NYC (specifically wall street) is the financial capital of the world. One of the most interesting parts I've always found about the city is how open it really is to tourists. All you need is a bit of cash and to be wary of ill-doers and visiting here can be one of the most enriching experiences of your life.
