The horizon is roughly 3 miles at sea level.

At night, I can only see the waves hitting the shore and it can look kinda of ghostly then.
Somedays, all you see is fog and a foot in front of your face.
But on those days, I hope to be inside with a book!

And on a sunny day, if I can see even one mile so I can see the waves hitting the shore, it's infinitely wonderful.

Is that a fact, or a Ray comment? Standing on the beach in Canada, we can see Fredonia, which is 23.64 miles away (according to Google Earth). However, it also depends on the weather.

Its been bugging me, so I had to look it up:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horizon...to_the_horizon

For observers on the ground with eye-level at h = 5 ft 7 in (5.583 ft), the horizon appears at a distance of 2.89 miles.
So... how is that possible? Or, am I not seeing where the Lake hits the shore of NY, but rather I'm seeing the city higher up on the hills?

I think you are confused, or at the very least your trailing question confused me.

Due to the curvature of the earth, if you are standing at sea level and look straight out across the ocean, you can only see out about 3 miles.

You will not be able to see a small boat at 4 miles.

If you look high up, you can see farther. Make sense?

I think my trailing question confused you... my point is I can see Fredonia, but you're saying I cannot see where the water hits the shore, which I'll believe. But, I can see the city up on the hilltops on some days, which raises a new question.. how far can you see? And that all depends on the weather. Some days we can see Fredonia, some days its too hazy.

Isn't what we see just the light reflecting off far away objects reaching us?

You can "see" a star that is billions of miles away because the light travels here and does not get blocked along the way and still bright enough to be visible to you.

Theoretically you can see infinitely, as long as the light from crazy far away can get here

True.... and if something is 50 light-years away from us, what we see today is what happened 50 years ago. So if we see a star explode, for example, that didn't just happen, it happened in 1958.

    My head hurts.
